On Why We Exist
I'm writing this having just stepped off a stairstepper at the gym — proof that the best ideas don't wait for the right moment. They arrive when you're moving, when you're present, when you're somewhere you actually want to be. That's what Velayo is about.
We were born on a boat in the British Virgin Islands, and we intend to stay close to the water. Not because it's romantic — though it is — but because we live healthier, we think clearer, and we build better when we are where we most want to be. That is the premise of this company, and every product we build is proof of it.
"The best technology feels like freedom — not friction. We are here to build that technology, and to live that truth every single day."
On How We Work
There are three jobs in this company. Every single person — regardless of title — holds all three in some measure.
What makes each of us unique is the percentage. A person hired to lead sales might spend 70% selling — but the other 30% is spent building and supporting. AI will continually shift those percentages in ways that make all of us stronger. There are no passengers inside this company. Passengers are the people we are privileged to serve.
On Our Culture
This company was born out of love. Not as a metaphor — as a foundation. The giving, receiving, and respecting of love is what makes us fundamentally human. When our intelligence is connected to love, we become powerful. We become beautiful. We become safe.
We will operate a no-asshole culture — inspired by the one I saw work at Splunk, and built to be even stronger here. But ours will not be soft. We are not afraid to be challenging. We are not afraid to hold each other accountable. We are not afraid of friction when it is in service of our core values.
You can have tremendous love and respect for another crew member — and still challenge them when their decisions introduce friction against our mission. That is not conflict. That is love in action. We challenge each other because we believe in each other, because our passengers deserve our best, and because the mission demands it.
Our Values
On How We Live
There is no time clock here. No factory whistle. No 9 to 5. The boat is not a vessel on a deadline — it is a safe harbor. Other boats in history ran on strict schedules because they were delivering passengers or goods. We are not delivering passengers or goods. We are creating a place where the people who build extraordinary things can do their best work — protected, rested, and free.
When you are where you want to be, work stops feeling like work. You always want to do it. The ocean inspires it. The crew energizes it. The mission demands it. But never — never — at the compromise of your health and happiness. If you are not happy and you are not healthy, stop working. The work will wait. You will not.
Let the sun guide some of you. Let the moon guide others. Be where you are happiest — and get your rest.
"Every member of this crew gets eight hours of sleep. That is not a suggestion. It is the most important decision we make toward our happiness — and the one we all tend to compromise the most. Don't."
Eight hours of sleep is not a luxury. It is our highest-performance tool. The decision that every other good decision flows from. A crew that rests deeply thinks more clearly, builds more beautifully, and supports each other more generously. We will be a stronger crew. We will have a faster boat — more agile, and able to adjust.
To Our Investors
You will measure us on three things: our ideas — do they meet our own horizon standard? Our actions — do we execute with the quality of our mast, always reaching? And our output — did we reach our destination, one waypoint at a time, delighting our passengers along the way?
We will never ask you to trust us without evidence. Every app we ship is evidence. Every passenger we delight is evidence. Every crew member who builds from the water and lives the mission is evidence. We are not just building a company. We are living proof that the greatest investment in AI is the one that makes life genuinely better for all of us.
To the Other Boats
To the crews of the other boats around us — the builders, the dreamers, the founders in their own harbours — we see you. We respect you. We are not in competition with you. The rising tide lifts all boats. What we learn, we share. What we build, we open. The Harbour was designed for more than one fleet.
"The ocean is our compass. The mission is our map. And we are only just setting sail."
