On Where It Began
It started with a piece of paper.
Not a pitch deck. Not a product brief. A shopping list — the kind that has lived on kitchen counters and refrigerator doors for generations. The most ordinary object in the world. And yet, according to research, people who use a list save 10% or more on their annual grocery bill. At a US household average of around $16,000 a year, that is real money sitting right there on the counter every single week, waiting to be kept.
We asked ourselves a simple question: what if we took that humble piece of paper and built the best version of it that has ever existed? Not by making it complicated. Not by adding features for the sake of adding features. But by applying AI — quietly, intentionally — to make something everyone already does feel effortless, smarter, and just a little more joyful.
That question became OurProvisions.
The Numbers Behind the List
We did not set out to build a budgeting app. We set out to build something you actually use — and that makes your life better by simply being there. The savings are a consequence of the habit. The habit is what we design for.
What Is in Alpha
OurProvisions Alpha is live. I am using it. Every week, real groceries, real household. Here is what is working today.
We have been iterating on the design with real testers and real feedback since the beginning. That does not stop. Every version gets closer to the thing we set out to build — the list that does not feel like work.
The Mission in a Grocery Store
Spending less time in the store is not just about efficiency. It is about what that time becomes instead. A longer evening. A walk by the water. A meal cooked without rushing. Time is the thing we are really building for.
And over time, OurProvisions will do more than save time. It will gently nudge you toward options that are healthier — better for your body, better for the people you feed. It will surface choices that are earth kind — lower impact, more considered, less wasteful. Not by lecturing. Not by removing your agency. But by making the better choice the easier one.
"The best technology feels like freedom — not friction. OurProvisions is our first proof of that belief."
— Dan, First Builder & CEO · VelayoHow It Was Built
I built OurProvisions as a solo operator — CEO, engineer, and navigator — using AI as my co-builder at every step. Claude helped me write it, design it, and think through it. Not because I could not find a team, but because I wanted to prove that one person with the right tools and the right conviction can build something worth using.
This is the Velayo thesis in action: AI does not replace the founder's judgment — it amplifies it. Every feature, every design choice, every word in the interface was still mine. Claude was the boat. I was the navigator.
This is also a message I want to send to the people building the tools I build with. To the team at Anthropic: I am living what you are building. Not as a benchmark. Not as a demo. As a founder who wakes up every day and uses your work to ship real things, for real people, in service of a genuine belief that AI can make life better. Thank you for building it.
What Is Next
OurProvisions will keep getting smarter. The AI-built list is coming in beta — the feature that removes the last friction from the experience entirely. Budget intelligence will surface when it is ready to earn its place. Healthier and earth kind suggestions will arrive as the platform learns your household.
And beyond OurProvisions, the fleet keeps growing. OurManifest and OurDiscovery are already charted on the horizon. The Harbour platform is being laid down beneath all of it — the shared infrastructure that makes every app in the fleet smarter because of every other one.
The first waypoint is in the water. The voyage has begun.
"Spend less time in the store. More time doing the things you love. That was always the point."
